A vulnerability was found in Foo Labs Xpdf 3.0.1 Pl1 (Document Reader Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function DCTStream::readProgressiveDataUnit
of the file Stream.cc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Array index error in the DCTStream::readProgressiveDataUnit method in xpdf/Stream.cc in Xpdf 3.02pl1, as used in poppler, teTeX, KDE, KOffice, CUPS, and other products, allows remote attackers to trigger memory corruption and execute arbitrary code via a crafted PDF file.
The weakness was shared 11/07/2007 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secunia.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-4352 since 08/14/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67606 (Oracle Linux 4 : xpdf (ELSA-2007-1029)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155992 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for CUPS (ELSA-2007-1022)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at foolabs.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
