The manipulation as part of a .htaccess File leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 08/24/2016 by Wiswat Aswamenakul as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The following code is the reason for this vulnerability:
/\.(phps?|pht(ml)?|phl|s?html?|js)[0-9]*$/iThe advisory points out:
Dotclear has a feature to upload files in Media Manager. However, by default, there is a filtering to prevent authenticated users to upload malicious files, such PHP code, to execute on the server.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The advisory illustrates:
The above filter does not filter .htaccess file which allows authenticated users to upload .htaccess file to the server which enable PHP code execution on any file extension.
Upgrading to version 2.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
