A buffer overflow vulnerability in login function in QNAP QTS version 4.2.6 build 20171026, 4.3.3.0378 build 20171117, 4.3.4.0387 (Beta 2) build 20171116 and earlier could allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on NAS devices.
The bug was discovered 12/15/2017. The weakness was disclosed 12/15/2017 as NAS-201712-15 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at qnap.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-17030 since 11/28/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Multiple buffer overflow vulnerabilities were recently found in QTS 4.2.6 build 20171026, 4.3.3.0378 build 20171117, 4.3.4.0387 (Beta 2) build 20171116 and earlier. If exploited, these vulnerabilities may allow remote attackers to run arbitrary code on NAS devices.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11899 (QNAP QTS Multiple Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 4.2.6 Build 20171208, 4.3.3.0396 Build 20171205 or 4.3.4.0411 Beta 3 Build 20171208 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
