This vulnerability allows remote attackers to deny service on vulnerable installations of The Squid Software Foundation Squid 3.5.27-20180318. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within ClientRequestContext::sslBumpAccessCheck(). A crafted request can trigger the dereference of a null pointer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to create a denial-of-service condition to users of the system. Was ZDI-CAN-6088.
The bug was discovered 04/19/2018. The weakness was presented 05/16/2018 as ZDI-10-117 (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-1172 since 12/05/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 27 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110032 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : squid3 (SUSE-SU-2018:1365-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171141 (OpenSUSE Security Update for squid (openSUSE-SU-2018:1135-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
