OpenEMR up to 5.0.1.3 Patient Portal import_template.php docid path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenEMR up to 5.0.1.3 (Business Process Management Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file portal/import_template.php of the component Patient Portal. The manipulation of the argument docid as part of a Directory leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal in portal/import_template.php in versions of OpenEMR before 5.0.1.4 allows a remote attacker authenticated in the patient portal to delete arbitrary files via the "docid" parameter when the mode is set to delete.

The bug was discovered 08/07/2018. The weakness was presented 08/13/2018 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-15141 since 08/07/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:portal/import_template.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.

Upgrading to version 5.0.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Exploit-DB (45202). See 122812 and 122814 for similar entries.
