Linux Kernel up to 2.4.28 smbfs smb_recv_trans2 information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.28 (Operating System). This issue affects the function smb_recv_trans2 of the component smbfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple vulnerabilities in the samba filesystem (smbfs) in Linux kernel 2.4 and 2.6 allow remote samba servers to cause a denial of service (crash) or gain sensitive information from kernel memory via a samba server (1) returning more data than requested to the smb_proc_read function, (2) returning a data offset from outside the samba packet to the smb_proc_readX function, (3) sending a certain TRANS2 fragmented packet to the smb_receive_trans2 function, (4) sending a samba packet with a certain header size to the smb_proc_readX_data function, or (5) sending a certain packet based offset for the data in a packet to the smb_receive_trans2 function.

The bug was discovered 09/25/2004. The weakness was released 11/17/2004 by Stefan Esser with eMatters (Website). The advisory is shared at security.e-matters.de. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0883 since 09/22/2004. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 53 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20679 (Ubuntu 4.10 : linux-source-2.6.8.1 vulnerabilities (USN-60-0)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18136) and Tenable (20679). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 996, 1000, 999 and 997.
