Integer overflow in fetch on FreeBSD 4.1 through 5.3 allows remote malicious servers to execute arbitrary code via certain HTTP headers in an HTTP response, which lead to a buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 11/18/2004. The weakness was disclosed 11/18/2004 by Colin Percival (Website). The advisory is available at ftp.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-1053 since 11/18/2004. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15761 (FreeBSD : SA-04:16.fetch), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 4-STABLE eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.FreeBSD.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
