A vulnerability has been found in Google Chrome 23.0.1271.97 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file containing of the component PDF Viewer. The manipulation of the argument Colorspace
as part of a PDF File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. Google Chrome before 24.0.1312.52 does not properly handle image data in PDF documents, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted document.
The weakness was released 01/10/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (Inferno) with Google Security Team as Issue 162776 as confirmed bug report (Website). The advisory is available at code.google.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5157 since 09/24/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/21/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63469 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (46bd747b-5b84-11e2-b06d-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120803 (Google Chrome Prior to 24.0.1312.52 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 24.0.1312.52 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
