A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing of the file drivers/hid/hid-core.c of the component Report ID Field. The manipulation of the argument CONFIG_HID
with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple array index errors in drivers/hid/hid-core.c in the Human Interface Device (HID) subsystem in the Linux kernel through 3.11 allow physically proximate attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via a crafted device that provides an invalid Report ID.
The weakness was disclosed 08/28/2013 by Kees Cook with Google Inc. as Linux HID security flaws as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-2888 since 04/11/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69859 (Fedora 19 : kernel-3.10.11-200.fc19 (2013-16379)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156825 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Kernel (ELSA-2014-0433)).
Upgrading to version 3.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch PATCH 01/14 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at marc.info. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (69859). The entries 9736, 10106, 10108 and 10109 are pretty similar.
