A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file drivers/hid/hid-picolcd_core.c of the component picolcd HID Driver. The manipulation of the argument CONFIG_HID_PICOLCD
with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
drivers/hid/hid-picolcd_core.c in the Human Interface Device (HID) subsystem in the Linux kernel through 3.11, when CONFIG_HID_PICOLCD is enabled, allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and OOPS) via a crafted device.
The weakness was presented 08/28/2013 by Kees Cook with Google Inc. as Linux HID security flaws as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2899 since 04/11/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69910 (Fedora 18 : kernel-3.10.11-100.fc18 (2013-16336)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167699 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0481-1) - (Deprecated)).
Upgrading to version 3.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch PATCH 13/14 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at marc.info. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
