Microsoft Windows prior 1 WINS memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System). This affects an unknown part of the component WINS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The WINS service (wins.exe) on Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000 Server, and Windows Server 2003 allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary memory locations and possibly execute arbitrary code via a modified memory pointer in a WINS replication packet to TCP port 42, aka the "Association Context Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 11/26/2004. The weakness was released 11/29/2004 by Kostya Kortchinsky and Nicolas Waisman with Immunity as MS04-045 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at immunitysec.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1080 since 11/29/2004. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 2 months, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at beyonce.beyondsecurity.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15962 (MS04-045: WINS Code Execution (870763)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90199 (Microsoft Windows WINS Replication Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (MS04-045)).

Upgrading to version 1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS04-045 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3017. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3168.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18259), Tenable (15962) and Exploit-DB (909). Further details are available at xforce.iss.net. Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 1041.
