A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version not known). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file drivers/hid/hid-multitouch.c of the component Report Index Handler. The manipulation of the argument CONFIG_HID_MULTITOUCH
with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple array index errors in drivers/hid/hid-multitouch.c in the Human Interface Device (HID) subsystem in the Linux kernel through 3.11, when CONFIG_HID_MULTITOUCH is enabled, allow physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption, or NULL pointer dereference and OOPS) via a crafted device.
The weakness was published 08/28/2013 by Kees Cook with Google Inc. as Linux HID security flaws as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2897 since 04/11/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69910 (Fedora 18 : kernel-3.10.11-100.fc18 (2013-16336)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167699 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0481-1) - (Deprecated)).
Applying the patch PATCH 11/14 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at marc.info. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
