A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (version unknown). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the file drivers/hid/hid-pl.c of the component patherlord HID Driver. The manipulation of the argument CONFIG_HID_PANTHERLORD
with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
drivers/hid/hid-pl.c in the Human Interface Device (HID) subsystem in the Linux kernel through 3.11, when CONFIG_HID_PANTHERLORD is enabled, allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based out-of-bounds write) via a crafted device.
The weakness was published 08/28/2013 by Kees Cook as Linux HID security flaws as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2892 since 04/11/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70200 (Debian DSA-2766-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195927 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-1976-1)).
Applying the patch PATCH 06/14 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at marc.info. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (70200). Similar entries are available at 7849, 10106, 10107 and 10108.
