Linux Kernel LED State drivers/hid/hid-sony.c buzz_set_leds memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version not known). Affected by this vulnerability is the function buzz_set_leds of the file drivers/hid/hid-sony.c of the component LED State Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

drivers/hid/hid-sony.c in the Human Interface Device (HID) subsystem in the Linux kernel through 3.11, when CONFIG_HID_SONY is enabled, allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based out-of-bounds write) via a crafted device.

The weakness was disclosed 08/28/2013 by Kees Cook as Linux HID security flaws as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2890 since 04/11/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80150 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2014:1669-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

Applying the patch PATCH 04/14 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at marc.info. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (80150). The entries 10106, 10107, 10108 and 10109 are pretty similar.
