Apple macOS up to 10.12.4 HFS Memory access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple macOS up to 10.12.4 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component HFS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability (Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. macOS before 10.12.5 is affected. The issue involves the "HFS" component. It allows attackers to bypass intended memory-read restrictions via a crafted app.

The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was presented 05/15/2017 by Patrick Wardle (OSS-Fuzz) with Zero Day Initiative as HT207797 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-6990 since 03/17/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

A validation issue was addressed with improved input sanitization.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100270 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370396 (Apple macOS Sierra Security Update 10.12.5, El Capitan 2017-002 and Yosemite 2017-002 Not Installed (2017-002)).

Upgrading to version 10.12.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (100270) and SecurityFocus (BID 98468†). See VDB-101255, VDB-101256, VDB-101257 and VDB-101258 for similar entries.
