In Wireshark 2.2.0 to 2.2.6 and 2.0.0 to 2.0.12, the DNS dissector could go into an infinite loop. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-dns.c by trying to detect self-referencing pointers.

The bug was discovered 06/01/2017. The weakness was released 06/02/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-9345. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370421 (Wireshark Multiple Vulnerabilities (wnpa-sec-2017-22 to wnpa-sec-2017-33)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
