Double free vulnerability in Microsoft Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 SP1 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted service description that is not properly handled by services.exe in the Service Control Manager (SCM), aka "Service Control Manager Double Free Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 09/10/2013 as MS13-077 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3862 since 06/03/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69836 (MS13-077: Vulnerability in Windows Service Control Manager Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2872339)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.

Applying the patch KB2872339 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
