A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows up to XP (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Win32k Multiple Fetch Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-1342, CVE-2013-1343, CVE-2013-3864, and CVE-2013-3865.
The weakness was presented 09/10/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as MS13-076 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1344 since 01/12/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/24/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69835 (MS13-076: Vulnerabilities in Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2876315)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90907 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Elevation of Privilege (MS13-076)).
Applying the patch MS13-076 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
