A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Microsoft Office 2003/2007/2010 (Office Suite Software). This affects an unknown code of the component Word File Handler. The manipulation as part of a Word File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Word 2003 SP3, 2007 SP3, and 2010 SP1 and SP2; Office Compatibility Pack SP3; and Word Viewer allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted Office document, aka "Word Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was published 09/10/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Ben Hawkes and Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as MS13-072 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3850 since 06/03/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/24/2021).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3585 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69832 (MS13-072: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2845537)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110216 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-072)).

Applying the patch MS13-072 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13191.
