wp-includes/functions.php in WordPress before 3.6.1 does not properly determine whether data has been serialized, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by triggering erroneous PHP unserialize operations.
The bug was discovered 04/03/2013. The weakness was released 09/11/2013 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared at codex.wordpress.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4338 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 161 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:wp-includes/functions.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70152 (Fedora 19 : wordpress-3.6.1-1.fc19 (2013-16925)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12751 (WordPress Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at core.trac.wordpress.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
