WordPress before 3.6.1 does not properly validate URLs before use in an HTTP redirect, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended redirection restrictions via a crafted string.

The weakness was disclosed 09/11/2013 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is available at codex.wordpress.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4339 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 2 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69895 (Debian DSA-2757-1 : wordpress - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12751 (WordPress Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 3.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at core.trac.wordpress.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87058) and Tenable (69895). The entries 10260, 10261, 10263 and 10264 are pretty similar.
