Linux Kernel up to 4.11.4 ALSA Driver sound/core/timer.c information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.11.4 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file sound/core/timer.c of the component ALSA Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

sound/core/timer.c in the Linux kernel before 4.11.5 is vulnerable to a data race in the ALSA /dev/snd/timer driver resulting in local users being able to read information belonging to other users, i.e., uninitialized memory contents may be disclosed when a read and an ioctl happen at the same time.

The bug was discovered 06/07/2017. The weakness was released 06/17/2017 by Alex (Website). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-1000380 since 06/13/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101127 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2017-716) (Stack Clash)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351446 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAC2012-2018-012).

Upgrading to version 4.11.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (101127). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 96555, 96560, 96561 and 96562.
