CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in libmtp up to 1.1.12 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function ptp_unpack_EOS_CustomFuncEx of the file ptp-pack.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An integer overflow vulnerability in the ptp_unpack_EOS_CustomFuncEx function of the ptp-pack.c file of libmtp (version 1.1.12 and below) allows attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds memory access) or maybe remote code execution by inserting a mobile device into a personal computer through a USB cable.

The bug was discovered 03/16/2017. The weakness was shared 06/24/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-9831 since 06/23/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 99 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101775 (Debian DLA-1029-1 : libmtp security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276720 (Fedora Security Update for libmtp (FEDORA-2017-4c57da6642)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (101775). The entry VDB-102785 is related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
