Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component FTP URI Handler. The manipulation with the input value %0A leads to a code injection vulnerability. CRLF injection vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary FTP commands via an ftp:// URL that contains a URL-encoded newline ("%0a") before the FTP command, which causes the commands to be inserted into the resulting FTP session, as demonstrated using a PORT command.

The weakness was presented 12/05/2004 by Albert Puigsech Galicia with Rapid7 as MS06-042 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at 7a69ezine.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1166 since 12/09/2004. The attack may be launched remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22184 (MS06-042: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (918899)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100036 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS06-042)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
