Django up to 1.6 Authentication Framework Large Password improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The authentication framework (django.contrib.auth) in Django 1.4.x before 1.4.8, 1.5.x before 1.5.4, and 1.6.x before 1.6 beta 4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a long password which is then hashed.

The weakness was released 09/15/2013 as Security Release Notes as confirmed blog post (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at djangoproject.com. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1443 since 01/26/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70066 (FreeBSD : django -- denial-of-service via large passwords (05dc6efa-2370-11e3-95b7-00e0814cab4e)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195918 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Python-django Vulnerabilities (USN-1967-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at djangoproject.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87129) and Tenable (70066). Further details are available at arstechnica.com. Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 10295.
