Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 CoreMedia memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component CoreMedia. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted movie file with Sorenson encoding.

The weakness was released 09/18/2013 by Tom Gallagher and Paul Bates with Microsoft as APPLE-SA-2013-09-18-2 iOS 7 as confirmed mailinglist post (Website) via Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). The advisory is shared for download at prod.lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

Playing a maliciously crafted movie file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution Description: A buffer overflow existed in the handling of Sorenson encoded movie files. This issue was addressed through improved bounds checking.
This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1019 since 01/10/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/25/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70257 (Apple TV < 6.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121203 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2013-05-22-1)).

Upgrading to version iOS 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84461) and Tenable (70257). zdnet.com is providing further details. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 5610, 8303, 8559 and 8792.
