Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 PDF Image JPEG2000 Image memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component PDF Image Handler. The manipulation as part of a JPEG2000 Image leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in ImageIO in Apple Mac OS X before 10.8.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via crafted JPEG2000 data in a PDF document.

The weakness was released 09/18/2013 by Felix Groebert with Google Security Team as APPLE-SA-2013-09-18-2 iOS 7 as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is shared at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1026 since 01/10/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/25/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70257 (Apple TV < 6.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121456 (Apple Mountain Lion v10.8.5 and Security Update 2013-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2013-09-12-1)).

Upgrading to version iOS 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87114) and Tenable (70257). Additional details are provided at zdnet.com. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 5610, 8303, 8559 and 8792.
