The IPSec implementation in Apple Mac OS X before 10.8.5, when Hybrid Auth is used, does not verify X.509 certificates from security gateways, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof security gateways and obtain sensitive information via a crafted certificate.

The weakness was published 09/18/2013 by Alexander Traud as APPLE-SA-2013-09-18-2 iOS 7 as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is shared at prod.lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

The DNS name of an IPSec Hybrid Auth server was not being matched against the certificate, allowing an attacker with a certificate for any server to impersonate any other. This issue was addressed by improved certificate checking.
The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1028 since 01/10/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/25/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69877 (Mac OS X 10.8.x < 10.8.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121456 (Apple Mountain Lion v10.8.5 and Security Update 2013-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2013-09-12-1)).

Upgrading to version iOS 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
