The IPv6 implementation in the kernel in Apple iOS before 7 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted ICMPv6 packets.
The weakness was presented 09/18/2013 by Marc Heuse as APPLE-SA-2013-09-18-2 iOS 7 as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is shared for download at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-2391 since 06/05/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70257 (Apple TV < 6.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 296021 (Oracle Solaris 10 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Third Party Bulletin - January 2018)).
Upgrading to version iOS 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
