Sun Solaris 9 on SPARC Sendmail DNS Reply memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 9 on SPARC (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Sendmail. The manipulation as part of a DNS Reply leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in Sendmail before 8.12.5, when configured to use a custom DNS map to query TXT records, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a malicious DNS server.

The bug was discovered 06/28/2002. The weakness was presented 12/14/2004 by Joost Pol and Anton Rang (ERNE) with Sun Microsystems Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0906. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 98 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11232 (Sendmail Custom DNS Map TXT Query Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SMTP problems and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 8.12.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (9443) and Tenable (11232).
