CHICKEN scheme 4.12.0 Fix CVE-2012-6125 algorithmic complexity

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in CHICKEN scheme 4.12.0. Affected is an unknown function of the component Fix CVE-2012-6125. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a algorithmic complexity vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-407. An algorithm in a product has an inefficient worst-case computational complexity that may be detrimental to system performance and can be triggered by an attacker, typically using crafted manipulations that ensure that the worst case is being reached. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2012-6125, all versions of CHICKEN Scheme up to and including 4.12.0 are vulnerable to an algorithmic complexity attack. An attacker can provide crafted input which, when inserted into the symbol table, will result in O(n) lookup time.

The bug was discovered 07/16/2017. The weakness was released 07/17/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-11343 since 07/16/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102603 (Fedora 26 : chicken (2017-76ce091a43)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276848 (Fedora Security Update for chicken (FEDORA-2017-82b5035f76)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (102603).
