gnome-exe-thumbnailer before 0.9.5 is prone to a VBScript Injection when generating thumbnails for MSI files, aka the "Bad Taste" issue. There is a local attack if the victim uses the GNOME Files file manager, and navigates to a directory containing a .msi file with VBScript code in its filename.

The bug was discovered 07/17/2017. The weakness was disclosed 07/18/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at news.dieweltistgarnichtso.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-11421 since 07/18/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196907 (Ubuntu Security Update for gnome-exe-thumbnailer Vulnerability (CVE-2017-11421)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
