Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird 23.0 HTML5 Tree Builder resettheinsertionmode memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 23.0 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function nshtml5treebuilder::resettheinsertionmode of the component HTML5 Tree Builder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The nsHtml5TreeBuilder::resetTheInsertionMode function in the HTML5 Tree Builder in Mozilla Firefox before 24.0, Thunderbird before 24.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.21 does not properly maintain the state of the insertion-mode stack for template elements, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read) by triggering use of this stack in its empty state.

The weakness was shared 09/17/2013 by Atte Kettunen (Inferno) with OUSPG as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-77 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1720 since 02/13/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70036 (Fedora 19 : firefox-24.0-1.fc19 / xulrunner-24.0-2.fc19 (2013-16992)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195953 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Vulnerabilities (USN-1951-1)).

Upgrading to version 24.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (70036), SecurityFocus (BID 62447†), OSVDB (97402†), Secunia (SA54821†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41537†). Additional details are provided at mozilla.org. The entries VDB-10400, VDB-10401, VDB-10402 and VDB-10403 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
