The weakness was disclosed 08/18/2013 by Michael Niedermayer as avformat/matroskadec: check out_samplerate before using it in av_rescale as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 38 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 0.11.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at ffmpeg.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
