A vulnerability was found in Splunk up to 5.0.4 (Log Management Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Test/Troubleshoot Script. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 09/23/2013 by Gerhard Muntigh with Zero Day Initiative as SP-CAAAH76 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at splunk.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-6771 since 11/10/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70213 (Splunk < 5.0.5 Multiple Code Execution Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12771 (Splunk Multiple Command Execution Vulnerabilities (SP-CAAAH76)).
Upgrading to version 5.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
