The Express web framework before 3.11 and 4.x before 4.5 for Node.js does not provide a charset field in HTTP Content-Type headers in 400 level responses, which might allow remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via characters in a non-standard encoding.

The bug was discovered 03/18/2015. The weakness was disclosed 08/09/2017 as Bug 1203190 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-6393 since 09/15/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
