A vulnerability was found in Elasticsearch up to 1.5.x. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Snapshot API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The snapshot API in Elasticsearch before 1.6.0 when another application exists on the system that can read Lucene files and execute code from them, is accessible by the attacker, and the Java VM on which Elasticsearch is running can write to a location that the other application can read and execute from, allows remote authenticated users to write to and create arbitrary snapshot metadata files, and potentially execute arbitrary code.
The bug was discovered 06/09/2015. The weakness was released 08/09/2017 by Kevin Kluge as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-4165 since 06/02/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 17 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84410 (FreeBSD : elasticsearch -- security fix for shared file-system repositories (23232028-1ba4-11e5-b43d-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11586 (Elasticsearch Snapshot API Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (84410) and SecurityFocus (BID 75113†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
