Nagios Core before 4.3.3 creates a nagios.lock PID file after dropping privileges to a non-root account, which might allow local users to kill arbitrary processes by leveraging access to this non-root account for nagios.lock modification before a root script executes a "kill `cat /pathname/nagios.lock`" command.
The bug was discovered 07/29/2017. The weakness was disclosed 08/23/2017 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-12847 since 08/14/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103913 (GLSA-201710-20 : Nagios: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277693 (Fedora Security Update for nagios (FEDORA-2017-d270e932a3)).
Upgrading to version 4.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
