of the file xmlregexp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was published 09/11/2013 by Gaurav Gupta with Samsung as Bug 707749 - NULL pointer dereferenced in xmlregexp.c as confirmed advisory (Website). No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Applying the patch Fix potential NULL pointer dereferences in regexp code is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
