GNU C Library up to 2.17 string/strcoll_l.c alloca memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.17 (Software Library). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function alloca of the file string/strcoll_l.c of the component C Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in string/strcoll_l.c in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.17 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long string that triggers a malloc failure and use of the alloca function.

The weakness was published 09/06/2012 with Red Hat Security Response Team as Issue #2 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-4424 since 08/21/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69488 (Fedora 19 : glibc-2.17-14.fc19 (2013-15316)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195942 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Eglibc Vulnerabilities (USN-1991-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceware.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (69488). Similar entry is available at 10609.
