A vulnerability has been found in FFmpeg 3.3.3 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function mxf_read_index_entry_array
of the file libavformat/mxfdec.c. The manipulation as part of a Header leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In libavformat/mxfdec.c in FFmpeg 3.3.3, a DoS in mxf_read_index_entry_array() due to lack of an EOF (End of File) check might cause huge CPU consumption. When a crafted MXF file, which claims a large "nb_index_entries" field in the header but does not contain sufficient backing data, is provided, the loop would consume huge CPU resources, since there is no EOF check inside the loop. Moreover, this big loop can be invoked multiple times if there is more than one applicable data segment in the crafted MXF file.
The bug was discovered 08/30/2017. The weakness was released 09/07/2017 by Security Team (GitHub Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-14170 since 09/07/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103289 (openSUSE Security Update : ffmpeg / ffmpeg2 (openSUSE-2017-1067)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176709 (Debian Security Update for libav (DLA 1630-1)).
