The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was shared 10/08/2013 by Simon Zuckerbraun with Zero Day Initiative as MS13-080 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3871 since 06/03/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/26/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4583 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70846 (MS13-088: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2888505)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Applying the patch MS13-080 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13211.
