The USB drivers in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT allow physically proximate attackers to execute arbitrary code by connecting a crafted USB device, aka "Windows USB Descriptor Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 10/08/2013 by Andy Davis and Lucas Bouillot as MS13-081 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-3200 since 04/17/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70333 (MS13-081: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2870008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90913 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Remote Code Execution (MS13-081)).
Applying the patch MS13-081 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
