PHP up to 4.3.10/5.0.3 Upload magic_quotes_gpc path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in PHP up to 4.3.10/5.0.3 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function magic_quotes_gpc of the component Upload Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Multiple integer handling errors in PHP before 4.3.10 allow attackers to bypass safe mode restrictions, cause a denial of service, or execute arbitrary code via (1) a negative offset value to the shmop_write function, (2) an "integer overflow/underflow" in the pack function, or (3) an "integer overflow/underflow" in the unpack function. NOTE: this issue was originally REJECTed by its CNA before publication, but that decision is in active dispute. This candidate may change significantly in the future as a result of further discussion.

The weakness was shared 12/16/2004 by Stefano Di Paola with PHP Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at php.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1018 since 11/04/2004. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18091 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : php (MDKSA-2005:072)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12144 (PHP Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18515) and Tenable (18091). hardened-php.net is providing further details. The entries 1060, 1059, 1056 and 1055 are related to this item.
