A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in GNU binutils 2.29 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this issue is the function process_version_sections
of the file readelf.c. The manipulation as part of a Binary File leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The process_version_sections function in readelf.c in GNU Binutils 2.29 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (Integer Overflow, and hang because of a time-consuming loop) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted binary file with invalid values of ent.vn_next, during "readelf -a" execution.
The bug was discovered 09/12/2017. The weakness was released 09/12/2017 as Bug 21990 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-14333 since 09/12/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104331 (EulerOS 2.0 SP1 : binutils (EulerOS-SA-2017-1278)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Huawei Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170509 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for binutils (SUSE-SU-2017:3170-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (104331). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 105211, 105950, 106104 and 106105.
