The Windows NetBT Session Services component on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, Windows RT 8.1, Windows 10 Gold, 1511, 1607, and 1703, and Windows Server 2016 allows a remote code execution vulnerability when it fails to maintain certain sequencing requirements, aka "NetBIOS Remote Code Execution Vulnerability".
The bug was discovered 09/12/2017. The weakness was shared 09/12/2017 with Tencent as KB4038777 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is available at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-0161 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/11/2021). The advisory points out:
A race condition that could lead to a remote code execution vulnerability exists in NetBT Session Services when NetBT fails to maintain certain sequencing requirements. To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker needs to be able to send specially crafted NetBT Session Service packets to an impacted system.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103127 (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 September 2017 Security Updates), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91408 (Microsoft Windows Security Update September 2017).
Applying the patch KB4038777 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
