This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-8735 since 05/03/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. A spoofing vulnerability exists when Microsoft Edge does not properly parse HTTP content. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could trick a user by redirecting the user to a specially crafted website. The specially crafted website could either spoof content or serve as a pivot to chain an attack with other vulnerabilities in web services.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103128 (KB4038782: Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 September 2017 Cumulative Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91409 (Microsoft Edge Security Update for September 2017).

Applying the patch KB4038782 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
