The tpacket_rcv function in net/packet/af_packet.c in the Linux kernel before 4.13 mishandles vnet headers, which might allow local users to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow, and disk and memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted system calls.
The bug was discovered 08/29/2017. The weakness was disclosed 09/15/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-14497 since 09/15/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Upgrading to version 4.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
